Hawthorne is hiding something under his hat….. He wants to show you what his mama made him for the Sew In Tune series….
The gist is that each person in the series chooses a song to inspire an outfit. My kids have a particular obsession at the moment, so it seemed only fitting that I should go with …….
He seems to have taken a more literal view on the lyrics of the song, as he’s beating something with a stick…..but I’ll take it.
Hawthorne has been running around singing “bee-ah bee-ah!” for quite a while now, and he even has some special Michael Jackson moves to go with the playlist I have for his big sister. She was the originator as far s the MJ obsession, but baby brother needed clothes more than she did. Sorry, Violet! She does make a cameo appearance in my photos a bit down the way though…….
Hawthorne has definitely caught the bug because this morning he walked past me saying “I bad I bad.” Oh Lord.
I know that the obvious move here would be to make the epic Beat It jacket, but Violet has her heart set on one. She asks me weekly if I’ll make one for her. I totally plan to, but I’m not ready for that right now. Plus I needed to make the boy some clothes, and Violet would probably never speak to me again if I made Hawthorne a jacket instead of her. She’d be crushed.
So I took overall inspiration from the outfit he wears in the music video. The lines. The colors.
Somehow it came out a lot more “athletic” than I was going for, but I still think he looks pretty adorable. Then again I could dress him in a piece of lettuce and he’d still look adorable.
The shoulder patches reflect the sequin section on the MJ jacket, and the colors are ones found in the jacket and tee. The faded aqua blue is so wonderfully 80’s to me. FYI I used the Rowan Tee pattern, which is kinda funny considering the lovely lady who made the pattern is on the same Sew In Tune day as me.
I like the pattern. It’s not the first time I’ve whipped one up and it won’t be the last! Actually, I just made one for my oldest for Kids Clothes Week
I wanted something a little tight in the leg and dropped in the crotch, just as a personal preference for him since I think it looks cute (plus….diapers) so I did some Mini Hudsons. After seeing THESE that my friend Kristin made, I knew I had to make some for my people too.
It was my first time sewing a pair, and I really liked how they turned out. They’re pretty long still because they only start at 2T, and my 18 month old isn’t super tall. I didn’t feel like fussing around with shortening the pattern though, only to have him grow out of them three weeks later. You know how babies are. It’s like they don’t even care that you slaved over something handmade right before they decide to have a growth spurt. Gosh.
Just to see how it looked, I tried on a little black coat with the sleeves rolled up I made for him when he was a little baby. The coat actually fits better now than when he was pre-mobile. I kinda like it! Except for the part where he looks like a teenager. Not allowed, Hawthorne. How do you like that smolder? All the modern baby clothes companies may send me their model requests now. Ha.
For an authentic urban feel, I had him stand in front of some rogue recycling bin trash. Why is it always windiest on recycling day? Tell me this.
I maaaaay have tortured myself and my children by going to the mall and looking for a baby sized fedora for him to wear during photos. Apparently all the stores are getting them in spring. I know this because I searched ALL THE STORES, and asked ALL THE SALES PEOPLE. It was not the most fun day for me ever. I also did groceries with the three kids that morning.
Anyway…..So I came home with a pair of 80’s shades for him to wear, only to find out that they don’t really stay on if he’s not sitting still in the stroller. Go figure. But his sister is pure gold in them. She’s also lucky I went back to find her all three times she disappeared in the freaking mall.
Beat it girls! I’m all my mama’s for now.
Well, maybe he’ll tolerate some loving abuse from his sisters too. They just can’t resist him!
Now it’s time for me to Beat It! I’ve got the baby model here in my lap alternately munching on coconut flakes and nursing, and I’m a little nervous he’s going to reverse which thing he’s munching.
