I’ve made myself a few – nay – several shirts, hats, cowls etc that have never been blogged. Because I’m too awkward and also can’t work a camera remote. But! I’m on the Indiesew Fall pattern tour to share my brand new sloan leggings
(and Biscayne blouse to go with, because if I’m going to post pictures of me on here, I might as well do it all at once! …..actually I should have worn all the things I’ve made and never blogged all at once.)
I’ll give you all the details up front, because this sketchy little photo shoot gets weird really fast. See, I’m really the only one here who can wrangle my dslr camera, so I cleared a space large enough for an adult human in my bedroom and handed my husband the iPhone 6. Then I said “make sure you get my whole body in the shot because I’m blogging leggings.” Bless his heart. My legs didn’t quite make into any of the relatively non blurry shots. Most of them were shot diagonally. Lol. And three seconds in, the kids all showed up to party. Family life, yo. I don’t know how all the pro mom bloggers do it.
Yes, my eyes are closed, but my legs are visible.
SO, I sewed up a pair of Sloan leggings – pattern by Hey June – in a size medium with some medium/heavy weight cotton/spandex knit. I wanted something substantial for cold weather (which probably isn’t headed to Virginia for another like three months, but eventually) and also thick enough that all of my crawling around on the floor searching for Legos and lost library books wouldn’t wear the knees out too fast.
The fabric was ordered on faith from Fabric.com and worked out great for this pattern. At first I was hoping to sew them up in something totally outlandish and wild, but I was also determined to make this blouse for myself in this particular fabric. Pairing wild print with a somewhat busy top was giving me a headache, so I went safe with this dove gray. Though now I’m kicking myself a little for not choosing the Riley blake ninja knit
My boy showed up for a bit because he’s kind of a camera magnet these days. So used to getting his picture taken. Due to the handsomeness and stuff.
I’d like to say this was some kind of inspirational pose I struck, but I think I was just telling Violet that she was released to invade my personal space. I left it in because it makes my arm look thinner than the other shots. muaha
That’s Violet. Space invader.
As far as how the sewing went on the leggings, it was super fast and painless. Great pattern, great instructions. I went cautious and sewed a medium this time because of my misshapen mom body, but could have gone with a small. I narrowed the ankles after trying them on. My husband gave his eyebrow raise of approval when he saw me try them on. I’ve never met a Hey June pattern that wasn’t well done though. Adrianna has game. Speaking of Hey June, my top is also her pattern…..
Again, the sewing went great. I was never stuck even during the hidden placket part. It took a lot longer, obviously, not being leggings, but it wasn’t torture. I’m slow at sewing because of my dumb brain plus tons of interruptions from my three kids who are here with me all day every day. So if I have a time consuming project, it needs to be worth it and reliable.
The gorgeous fabric is Art gallery indelible by Katarina Roccella in voile. I bought it at Bolt in Portland when we were there last. One of my favorite shops on one of my favorite streets in the world.
The skirt I’m wearing was sewn by me in about ten minutes. Why haven’t I sewn knit skirts before?
Violet wanted to take more pictures of me, so here’s a fake fall shot under a sweetgum tree with inexplicably fallen leaves. The tree is probably just sick of summer.
Another violet shot. She says she’s becoming a photographer when she grows up. And an acrobat.
She does love being upside down.
