Hey, guys! Few things could have possibly made my little fashion and feminine things loving 6 year old happier than telling her she was going to be in a fashion show. She gasped and grabbed her clothes and started sashaying around immediately.
Thankfully we got the low pressure version of a fashion show – a virtual one – for the MadeIt fashion week extravaganza surrounding the release of Olu of Needle and Ted’s new collection of origami inspired patterns called Fold. No flash bulbs or creepy dudes required.
Oh, and stay tuned to the end because I’m going to tell you how to enter to win some patterns, a voucher to the fashion week sponsor NOSH, and how to get 20% off of all the patterns in the Fold collection. Plus I’ll give you a rundown of where to see all the other fashion week participants.
Given the space restraints for where I was taking pictures, Clover’s (butcher paper) runway was a bit stunted, but she preferred to strike poses at the back of it anyway. We made sure to show you plenty of her awesome kid bruises.
The fold collection is all origami inspired, so of course I had to include some origami in our little fashion show. Clover was more than happy to bring her paper crane along for the ride (he felt right at home because he was also made of butcher paper. heh). Her backdrop is also inspired by origami instructions. And I made some bluebell jewelry for her. We just did it all! I’ve been feeling sick and blah lately, so I spent a good portion of a Saturday learning to do origami on youtube.
I’ll tell you something embarrassing. I requested several origami books from the library but couldn’t figure out how to do anything in them because I can’t decipher the diagrams. It wasn’t until I found nice slow videos of hands folding paper that I made anything. Lol.
Given all the choices in the Fold collection, I had a hard time narrowing down what I was going to make. I kind of wanted to make everything. It’s all modern and architectural and super interesting. Different too. I chose to make the Petal Fold separates (a square necked top with option for origami pleat panel, and culottes) for Clover because she loves skirts, and culottes are more practical for a girl who also plays outside a lot. There’s a crazy cute playsuit version with a zip back too, but this girl waits wayyyyy too long to hit the john before it’s too late.
My plan was to include the option of the incredible origami pleat center panel in the top, but I attempted it with the fabric I used for the culottes – a gorgeous hemp/silk blend from Organic Cotton plus that I tie dyed – which is super boingy and shifty like linen but even worse. It kept getting wonkier and wonkier as I pleated it and after at least an hour of struggling with it, I just had to give up. I think it still looks really cute with piping and a non contrast center panel though.

We will be giving away a Madeit Pattern everyday of Fashion Week, Monday 31 August to Sunday 6 September, all you have to do is correctly answer a question related to the Fashion Show that I will post on Facebook or Instagram at random times of the day. I will post 1 question per day, the first person who correctly answers the question will win a pattern of their choice from the FOLD Collection. So follow us on Facebook and Instagram to make sure you are one of the first ones to see my question.
And to win a voucher to NOSH –
€50 voucher from NOSH
And that’s not all, NOSH are generously giving away 3 x €50 vouchers to spend in their online shop.
NOSH produce ecological quality clothing for children and women, and fabrics for people who love to make things with their own hands. All NOSH products are designed in Finland, and everything they create has its roots in the Nordic design tradition. I can vouch for the high quality of their organic cotton, I have used NOSH fabric quite a few times, here, here and here, and I love it. If you become the lucky winner of a €50 voucher you are in for a treat.
All you have to do is leave a comment on day 7 of Fashion Week (Sunday 6 September) letting me know what the highlights of the Fashion Shows were for you. I will pick a winner from the comments and the winner will be notified by email the following week.
Or if you follow Madeit Patterns on Instagram look out for the prompt for another chance of winning a €50 voucher.
And finally, you can actually help me win a nosh voucher as well by leaving positive feedback about how I included origami in my shoot. So drop some comments, please and thank you!
